What this calculator answers

The grade calculator converts points earned and points possible into a percentage. It can also show how many points were missed and a common letter-grade estimate.

Class policy matters

Teachers and schools may use weighted categories, curves, dropped assignments, late penalties, or custom grade bands. Use the result as a quick estimate unless your syllabus uses the same scale.

Useful study workflow

After a test, compare the points missed with the topics covered. The percentage tells you the outcome, but the missed questions tell you what to review next.

Planning note

For final grades, calculate each assignment category separately if the class uses weights. A simple points percentage may not match the official gradebook.

How to use it

  1. Enter points earned and total points possible.
  2. Review percentage, points missed, and letter estimate.
  3. Check the class syllabus before treating the estimate as final.

How the calculation works

Percentage equals points earned divided by points possible, multiplied by 100. The letter estimate uses a basic 90/80/70/60 scale and may not match a teacher's rubric, weighted categories, curve, or rounding policy.

Worked example

A score of 42 out of 50 is 84%, which this page labels B under the example scale. Consult the course syllabus before treating the letter as official.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculate a weighted course grade?

No. It calculates one points-based score. Weighted categories require each category's weight and average.

Why does my school show another letter?

Schools may use plus/minus grades, curves, different cutoffs, or special rounding rules.
