Why unit price matters
Package sizes can make prices hard to compare. Unit price turns each option into a cost per ounce, pound, item, serving, or sheet so the better value is easier to see.
Good shopping uses
Use it for groceries, paper goods, detergent, pet food, office supplies, supplements, and bulk purchases. It is especially useful when sale prices and package sizes both change.
Quality still matters
The cheapest unit price is not always the best choice if quality, expiration date, storage space, or waste is a problem.
Comparison tip
Use the same unit for both products. Comparing ounces to pounds or servings to grams without converting first can produce the wrong conclusion.

How the calculation works
Each unit price is package price divided by package quantity. Both quantities must use the same unit—such as ounces, sheets, servings, or items—for a valid comparison. Coupons and taxes should be reflected in the prices before comparing.
Worked example
Compare a 24-count package for $8.99 with a 16-count package for $6.49. The larger package is not automatically cheaper; the per-item results provide the comparable basis.
